Civil Protection Secretary General Vassilis Papageorgiou tendered his resignation in a letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday, "to primarily facilitate the work of Greek justice in the Tempi case," as he noted, referring to the deadly train collision of two years ago.

He added that he would "expend every effort to prove that I held no responsibility in terms of any operational actions or omissions related to the scene of the accident."

In an explanatory note, government sources said that the action was voluntary, like that of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Deputy Minister of Christos Triantopoulos, who had also resigned for reasons of propriety, as he is under investigation in the same case.
