Bridge monitoring system to cover 62 structures in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
A total of 62 road and railway bridges across the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace will be integrated into a continuous digital monitoring system under Greece's "Smart Bridges" initiative, aimed at improving infrastructure safety through real-time data collection and analysis.
The project will use modern digital technologies and specialized sensors to continuously monitor the structural condition of bridges, allowing authorities to detect potential problems early and improve maintenance planning. The initiative is being implemented by the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with funding from the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility under the Greece 2.0 plan.
Speaking during the project's presentation, Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening the safety and resilience of public infrastructure in the region. He also announced a separate partnership with the National Technical University of Athens to record and assess the condition of all bridges in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, providing authorities with a comprehensive scientific database to guide future interventions.
Regional officials said the monitoring system is expected to improve preventive maintenance, enhance public safety and support more efficient management of transport infrastructure throughout Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
