The Hellenic Network of Municipalities with Rivers signed a cooperation agreement with the Polytechnic of DUTH
Scientific support in the design and study of various development strategies, for the protection and upgrading of the natural environment by local authorities
A Cooperation Agreement between the Hellenic Network of Municipalities with Rivers and the Polytechnic School of the Democritus University of Thrace was signed on Friday, at the beginning of the Scientific Conference held by the Municipality of Xanthi in collaboration with the Network, for the utilization of urban aquatic ecosystems. The Pact "When the rivers return to the cities" was signed by the president of the Hellenic Network of Municipalities with Rivers and the mayor of Levades, Giannis Tagalekas and the Vice Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace, Professor Fotios Maris.
It is, in essence, the cooperation of the local government with the higher educational institutions and makes the municipalities, direct communicants of scientific knowledge and research.
As noted by the Municipality of Xanthi, "this cooperation will be able to assist the Network and its member municipalities individually, in the design and study of various development strategies for the protection and upgrading of the natural environment, which concerns river ecosystems, the strengthening the local economy and employment and improving the social and economic well-being of the people of the region.
The cooperation of the Network, its Member Municipalities and their local bodies with the Polytechnic School of DUTH, concerns the elaboration of relevant studies, as well as the organization of events, workshops and other awareness actions of the bodies and citizens - and especially young people - in environmental issues related to river ecosystems ".
In addition, the two parties agreed to establish a strategic partnership and mutual support by participating in project proposals.
The Mayor of Xanthi, Manolis Tsepelis, after the signing of the Cooperation Agreement, said: "We are happy and satisfied, because, after the cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, today, we connect the Network with the University of Thrace. The signing of the Cooperation Pact means, for us, the co-operation of the Local Government with the University Institutions and the local communities, promoting specific, targeted actions - under the high level, scientific guidance - that will give a positive development sign in our place, together».
