The Ministry of Education has ordered an administrative inquiry into a latest bullying incident involving a 12-year-old boy at a high school in the Athens suburb of Nea Ionia.

The ministry announced that the inquiry was ordered to determine any responsibility on the part of the school’s administration and the teachers who were allegedly present during the incident.

Additionally, the Teachers’ Association will convene an extraordinary meeting to enforce appropriate disciplinary measures for the students involved in the violent behavior toward the 12-year-old boy.

These students may be transferred to different schools outside the municipality they were attending.

Earlier this week, the victim and his father reported to authorities that a 14-year-old boy and his friends approached the 12-year-old in the schoolyard, telling him there was a 5-euro note in a nearby manhole and persuading him to retrieve it. When the 12-year-old entered the manhole, they trapped him by closing the lid.

Two teachers who were in the schoolyard at the time rescued the boy after realizing what had happened. They were arrested on charges of exposing a minor to danger.

The 14-year-old was also arrested after being identified by the victim, who, as the ministry noted, will receive psychological support for as long as needed.
