Strike to affect Greece-Italy routes on June 3, 4

The union is demanding more hirings and condemning what it claims are unfulfilled commitments by coastal shipping owners and the state.

The powerful seafarers’ union in Greece, PNO, on Wednesday announced a two-day strike on ferry boats plying the maritime routes from Patras and Igoumenitsa to Italian destinations, with the industrial action affecting Tuesday and Wednesday, June 3 to 4.

The union is demanding more hirings and condemning what it claims are unfulfilled commitments by coastal shipping owners and the state.

As opposed to most strikes called by other unions and federations in Greece, such as the civil servants’ union (ADEDY) and various educators’ groups, which have very low participation and impact, PNO’s mobilizations have “teeth”, i.e. ferry boats remain in ports during industrial actions.

This strike action is expected to significantly affect Greece-Italy routes amid the start of the summer season.

Besides more staffing on vessels, the union wants better conditions and pay for crews’ overnight stays and a say on the frequency of “express routes”.
