EU report slams Athens noise

Athens has failed to update its noise maps in over a decade, and local authorities have not taken the necessary steps to address the issue. The ECA highlighted Athens, along with Barcelona and Krakow, in a review of urban air and noise pollution management under EU-funded projects. The report noted some improvements in air quality over the past 15 years, but Athens still struggles with high levels of ozone pollution and lacks an effective plan for air quality management.

The report criticized Athens for poor coordination among city and national authorities, which has delayed the implementation of crucial measures, including air quality programs funded by the EU. The city has failed to address noise pollution properly, with no updated data on noise levels since 2014.

However, EU officials said a new EU-funded project to map noise levels is under way. The report recommended that Athens improve its coordination and environmental strategies to address both air and noise pollution effectively.

EU officials have allocated €185.5 billion for environmental improvements, focusing on air quality for the period 2021-27. However, noise pollution remains a lower priority for many member-states.
