Denmark bans Quran burning
In Denmark, a bill making the burning of holy books and attacks on these books illegal was adopted. In the vote held in the Danish Parliament, 77 deputies voted no, while 94 deputies voted in favour of the bill. According to the law adopted with the majority vote, the burning of the Holy Quran and other holy books, attacks on these books and inappropriate behaviour targeting religious values will be banned in the country.
Two years imprisonment
Those who violate the law will be fined or imprisoned for up to two years. The signature of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is required for the law to enter into force. While attacks on the Holy Quran have been intensified in Sweden and Denmark recently, the authorisation of these provocations was met with reaction. Rasmus Paludan, Danish far-right politician and leader of the Strict Direction Party, burned the Holy Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen on 27 January.
