At the conference held in Komotini, the contribution of the USA to the economic development of the region was discussed.

East Macedonia and Thrace State, in cooperation with the International Greek Economy Revitalization Initiative and AHERA "Orfeas" Komotini, held a conference on "Reviving the Greek Economy - US Contribution to the Economic Development and Stability of East Macedonia and Thrace Province".

The conference was held at the Music Palace in Komotini on Saturday, November 5th.

Government, parliament, local government representatives, heads of institutions and organizations of the political and business world and executives from Greece and the USA attended the conference.

The event in Komotini was attended on behalf of the government by Deputy Minister of Interior for Macedonia – Thrace Stavros Kalafatis, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yorgos Stilios, Deputy Minister of Tourism Sofia Zaharaki and the general secretaries of some ministries.

The purpose of the conference was explained as emphasizing the strategic advantages of the East Macedonia – Thrace Region and revealing the Greek-American cooperation in this field.

In his message to the conference, Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos emphasized that the province of East Macedonia and Thrace has become a critical energy center with the IGB, the pipeline connecting Greece to Bulgaria.

Theodorikakos said, "Komotini hosts very important investments such as Motor Oil's planned gas turbine station and Gek Terna, which will start construction in 2024. Thrace is a model of coexistence and cooperation for the progress and development of the region. At a time when people's relationships are seriously tested this region opens roads for states and nations as a whole," he said.

In his speech, Theodorikakos also talked about Greece's Akritas project, which protects the borders of Europe and international law.

Minister Theodorikakos said, “In this context, your initiative to restart the Greek economy and the increased cooperation between Greece and the USA are the guarantee of stability and development prospects for the Greek people and all the peoples of the region. All neighbors should know very well that we do not threaten anyone, but we do not accept threats from anyone." used the phrases.

Macedonian - Thrace Deputy Minister Stavros Kalafatis thanked the USA for its contribution to the revitalization of the Greek economy and the development and stability of the East Macedonia - Thrace province.

Kalafatis said, “Greece is getting stronger economically, geopolitically and militarily. A new policy is gaining. Eastern Macedonia – Thrace province also plays a catalyst role in this change. "The region is getting stronger with the contribution of the United States to both stability and economic growth," he said.

Deputy Minister Kalafatis also touched upon the transformation of Alexandroupoli into an energy and transportation hub.

“Aiming to contribute to the independence of our neighbors from Russian gas, Greece has invested in important infrastructure investments such as the construction of the floating liquefied natural gas LNG terminal in Alexandroupoli, not only to ensure energy efficiency, but also to provide liquefied natural gas to the north for the needs of the Western Balkans and Western Europe. The main terminal aims to be a main one," he said.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yorgos Stilios and Deputy Minister of Tourism Maria Zaharaki also gave speeches at the conference.

Qatar's Ambassador to Athens Waleed Mohammed Hassan Ahmad Al Emad also attended the conference in Komotini.
