IELKA: Supermarket basket cheaper in Greece compared to seven European countries
The prices of the "typical household basket" in Greek supermarkets are lower than in France, England, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Romania, according to a survey by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA) released on Monday.
The results are based on data from price comparison platforms in each country, but also on pricing from supermarket chains.
The price comparison is made with and without the value of VAT, which differs in each country. For the survey, prices were compared in a total of 41 product categories.
The figures include final prices of both branded and private label products in each country. It is clarified that the prices refer only to supermarket chains and not to other points of sale.
Comparing average basket prices, four countries have a significantly more expensive average basket than Greece. More specifically, Germany (39%), France (27%), United Kingdom (24%), Italy (11%), while Portugal has a 7% more expensive basket, Spain 8% and Romania 5%.
