Greek unemployment rate fell to 17.6 pct

The Greek unemployment rate fell to 17.6 pct of the workforce in April from 18.2 pct in March and 19.8 pct in April last year, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said in a report on Thursday.

The number of unemployed people totaled 833,858 in April, down 107,290 from the same month in 2018 (a decline of 11.4 pct) and a decline of 26,925 or 3.1 pct compared with March 2019. The number of employed people totaled 3,891,618, up 74,993 or 2.0 pct compared with April 2018. The unemployment rate among women was 21.7 pct from 24.4 pct in April 2018, while among men it fell to 14.5 pct from 16.1 pct. 

Unemployment in the 15-24 age group was 30.4 pct in April from 40.3 pct last year, in the 25-34 age group fell to 24.2 pct from 25 pct, in the 35-44 age group it fell to 16.3 pct from 18.2 pct, in the 45-54 age group it fell to 14.2 pct from 16.5 pct, in the 55-64 age group it eased to 13.8 pct from 15.8 pct and in the 65-74 age group it rose to 12.4 pct from 9.7 pct.
 Among the country's regions, Epirus-West Macedonia (20.5 pct from 24.7 pct) recorded the highest unemployment rate, followed by Macedonia-Thrace (18.7 pct from 20 pct), Peloponnese-West Greece-Ionian Islands (18.7 pct from 19.4 pct), Thessaly-Central Greece (18 from 18.8 pct), Attica (17.9 pct from 20.5 pct), Aegean (14.6 pct from 19.3 pct) and Crete (11.8 pct from 12.1 pct).
