Construction activity surges in 2024

A total of 30,992 permits were granted nationwide, corresponding to 7.28 million square meters of new buildings. The increase reflects the growing demand for residential and commercial development.
The Ionian Islands and Crete continued to be focal points for construction, with Lefkada again leading the pack. The island issued 586 new building permits, corresponding to over 160,000 square meters of new development.
Zakynthos and Paros also saw impressive numbers, with 420 and 349 new permits, respectively.
Meanwhile, the number of permits on Mykonos saw a notable decline. The Athens metropolitan area remains the most active, with the municipality issuing 2,549 permits for 1.7 million square meters of new development.
Other major regions include Central Macedonia and Crete, which recorded 1,707 and 1,591 permits, respectively. Thessaloniki’s suburbs, like Thermi, and municipalities on the Peloponnese, such as Patra, also saw high levels of activity.
