Turkish President Erdogan meets community leaders of Muslim-majority Sandzak region in Serbia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday met with political and religious leaders from Serbia's southwestern Sandzak region.

The meeting in the capital Belgrade included Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Akif Cagatay Kilic, a senior advisor on foreign policy and security, according to the Turkish Presidency.

No additional information was given on the meeting.

Sandzak – historically known as Sanjak – is a region in the Balkans with a majority Muslim population, situated in southwestern Serbia and eastern Montenegro. In 2021, Türkiye opened a consulate general in the Serbian city of Novi Pazar, the cultural center of the region.

Erdogan's stop in Serbia is part of a two-day Balkan tour, following his official visit to Albania on Thursday.

While in Belgrade, Erdogan held talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and attended a Türkiye-Serbia Business Forum to discuss bilateral ties and economic cooperation.
