Opposition Leader Mitsotakis Calls for PM Tsipras to Resign if SYRIZA Loses in the Euroelections

The Leader of the Opposition and President of the center-right New Democracy (ND) party Kyriakos Mitsotakis called Premier Alexis Tsipras to resign the night of the Euro elections on May 26, if his party loses.

Mitsotakis held a press conference ahead of the European elections.

At the Conference, the ND leader said that the message he receives from every part of Greece is one of a broad victory for his party on May 26.

“ND’s first priority is safety throughout the country” Mitsotakis noted replying to a question about public safety and order, ”because without safety there is no freedom”.

Referring to Tsipras, he called the prime minister a ”hypocrite” on the issue of the 13th pension (an additional monthly pension that will be given to pensioners every year, the introduction of which was announced earlier this week) and urged him to accept the amendment on the abolition of the -already voted by the Parliament- reduction of the tax-free threshold.

Mitsotakis added that if Tsipras does not abolish this reduction, then he will do it when he becomes Prime Minister.

The main opposition leader also repeated his proposal for the re-negotiation of the state’s primary surpluses with the EU. Under the current agreement between Athens and Brussels, Greece must achieve a primary surplus of 3.5 percent of its GDP every year until 2022.
