GSEE deactivating its X account because of platform's increasing 'toxicity'

The General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), Greece's largest umbrella trade union confederation, announced on Wednesday that it plans to deactivate its account on the social media platform X (former Twitter), citing changes that "reinforce toxicity" after this passed into the ownership of the tycoon Elon Musk.

According to the Confederation's announcement, "due to the change in the platform's policy, following the change in ownership, the spread of fake news, far-right conspiracy theories, racist views and, more generally, hate speech has increased alarmingly, reinforcing toxicity in users' conversations. This new situation has forced numerous unions, educational institutions, historical media and social organisations worldwide to withdraw from the platform. The social media breathe life into social dialogue, as long as rules are followed and basic conditions of impartiality and objectivity are ensured."

In this context, GSEE considers that it can't continue to be present in such a "toxic internet environment" and will examine alternative ways to communicate with society.
