Bulgarian Parliament approves resignation of Prime Minister Denkov

Parliament voted on Prime Minister Denkov's request for resignation.

The 216 deputies who took part in the parliamentary vote unanimously approved Denko's request.

According to the constitution, the Denkov government will remain in office until a new government is formed and receives a vote of confidence.

Negotiations on a new coalition between the Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party and the alliance Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) will start on 8 March due to internal disagreements within the ruling coalition.

If the negotiations are finalised, President Rumen Radev is expected to give the task of forming the cabinet to Mariya Gabriel, GERB's candidate for prime minister.

According to the agreement between the GERB party and the PP-DB alliance, it was foreseen to form a government with a 9-month mandate.

Denkov from PP-DB resigned after 9 months in office, while Gabriel from GERB is expected to become prime minister by rotation.
